Please read Upasana's oped in today's national daily Kantipur titled Reimagining Dignified Foreign Employment:
https://ekantipur.com/opinion/2024/08/21/the-concept-of-respectable-foreign-employment-51-23.html
Key points:
1) The birthplace lottery and how aspirants who are geographically, economically, and socially marginalized should be provided access to good migration opportunities. MLab's pilot initiatives with IMR aim to demonstrate this (see for example: https://lnkd.in/epDgH28R). Migration outcomes, too, currently resemble a lottery due to prevalent malpractices. Restrictive foreign employment regulations, such as domestic worker bans and unclear implementation guidelines of Japan's Specialized Skill Worker program, further exacerbate the uncertainty and risks associated with migration.
2) Promoting Good Overseas Opportunities:Initiatives that promote good overseas employment opportunities should be prioritized. Such efforts are not at odds with addressing malpractices/social costs in the sector or with goals of enhancing domestic employment opportunities. Instead, they are complementary. And for all the migration nerds out there, the Nepali translation of "place premium" is "स्थलगत लाभ" (next merch drop?).
